New disciplines for climate change mitigation

Climate change mitigation depends on enhanced recourse to renewable energies, gradually replacing today’s predominant carbon dioxide (CO₂) emitting sources in the production of electricity. The shift to hydropower, solar, tidal and wind energy implies more long-distance, international trade in electricity. While there has been an emphasis on small-scale local production based on subsidised feed-in tariffs, larger-scale operations will need to be produced where climatic conditions allow.
