New disciplines for climate change mitigation
by Thomas Cottier
Climate change mitigation depends on enhanced recourse to renewable energies, gradually replacing today’s predominant carbon dioxide (CO2) emitting sources in the production of electricity. The shift to hydropower, solar, tidal and wind energy implies more long-distance, international trade in electricity. While there has been an emphasis on small-scale local production based on subsidised feed-in tariffs, larger-scale operations will need to be produced where climatic conditions allow.
