Law has the potential to play a critical role in achieving the SDGs, facilitating a global economy which addresses poverty, human rights and environmental targets of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Trade, investment and financial law and cooperation can help or hinder efforts to achieve the SDGs. New legal research and practice knowledge can identify innovative provisions and rules, incentivising efforts for sustainability, and resolving disputes. Informed dialogue between expert jurists, decision-makers, advocates, practitioners and students offers opportunities for new knowledge, learning and impact.
The international symposium on the Global Economy, the Sustainable Development Goals and the Law will be held on July 15, 2022, co-hosted online by the World Trade Institute and the Centre for International Sustainable Development Law (CISDL), in cooperation with the McGill University, the University of Montreal, the University of Cambridge, the University of Costa Rica, the University of Nairobi, Hamad Bin Khalifa University, and the Swiss Italian University, together with the School of Environment, Enterprise and Development and the Balsillie School of International Affairs at the University of Waterloo, the International Law Association, the IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law, the McGill Journal of Sustainable Development Law (MJSDL), the Cambridge International Law Journal, Canada's Sustainable Development Solutions Network and other partners.
