Trade, Meat, and the Environment
A Brown Bag Seminar by Dora Simon, PhD Candidate at the University of Zurich Department of Economics.
Dora Simon presented about her paper which analyses the environmental effects of trade policy. A BLP model of consumer demand is estimated using supermarket data which is then combined with data on emissions related to meat production and transport. Counterfactual exercises show the effect of a decrease in meat tariffs in Switzerland on the environment. The analysis provides a scientific view on the "buy local" debate.
