MILE 14
Nithya Anand obtained her Bachelor’s degree in law, from the National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS), Kolkata, India. She also then engaged a nascent interest in economics, attending a Summer School on International Political Economy at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and attended an UNCTAD workshop on Dispute Settlement in International Trade Law. She has internship experience in government, intellectual property litigation, and non-governmental organizations. She served one year as a Law Clerk and Research Assistant at the Supreme (apex) Court of India, briefing and researching cases on a range of issues. Her primary focus was Public Interest Litigations, including environmental and urban planning concerns; mediation / dispute settlement and private international law. She was part of the core team from the Supreme Court of India, organizing the first international gathering of disaster management practitioners, academics and the legal community, in the aftermath of the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011. She has also practiced taxation law at the Madras High Court, where she appreciated the opportunity to work with stalwarts in the field, and worked closely with entrepreneurs and small business. She has assisted in publications on Service Tax, the fastest developing legal field of contemporary India. MILE was a natural choice of graduate study, because it brings together, in her mind, a training in law and a passion for economics, with the potential to make macro-impact. She hopes to someday assist in the formation of India’s trade policy. She also intends to truly understand global perspectives, preferably by reading one book from every country in the world.
