Kätlin Pertel earned her LL.B. degree with a minor in international relations from the University of Tartu (Estonia). She also studied at the University of Helsinki (Finland), where she specialized in international law. In the summer of 2009, Ms Pertel participated in the Georgetown University multidisciplinary summer academy program on international law, politics and economics. Thereafter, Ms Pertel further pursued her interest in international law at the Geneva Law School and Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, where she obtained her LL.M degree in International Law and Dispute Settlement (MIDS programme). In addition to studying at the Master in International Law and Economics (MILE) programme at the World Trade Institute, University of Bern, Ms Pertel took up the position of research assistant for Roberto Echandi, Director of the International Investment Initiative (I3). Her additional professional experience includes work for the Paris-based international arbitration law firm Derains&Gharavi, Geneva-based arbitration law firm Byrne-Sutton Bollen Kern, the Confederation of Finnish Industries as well as the Legal Department of the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Ms Pertel speaks Estonian, English, Finnish, German and Russian. In her leisure time, she enjoys world literature, long distance running, physics, history and art.
