Anvar Rahmetov
MILE 17
I am Anvar Rahmetov, a MILE 17 graduate from Uzbekistan. I made an early-career switch into trade policy after obtaining a PhD in political economy and working in the political department of the European Union representation in Tashkent.
I graduated WTI summa cum laude with a thesis on the classification of subsidies, supervised by Christian Knebel from the UNCTAD. My research fed into the updated, 2019 version of the UNCTAD International Classification of Non-tariff Measures. It also helped me join the Global Trade Alert team at the University of St.Gallen as an analyst of the state aid regime in Russia and the post-Soviet states and the World Bank Investment Policy and Promotion unit, specializing in the analysis of investment subsidies.
I have been with the World Bank since then, and am currently with the team advising the government of the Republic of Niger on trade facilitation matters.
In a private capacity, I am supporting Uzbekistan’s WTO accession negotiations.
