Manfred Elsig on the chances of a woman becoming the DG of the WTO for the first time
Roberto Azevêdo has officially left his post as Director General of the WTO on 31 August. Of the eight candidates for the vacancy, Nigeria's ex-finance and foreign minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, is said to have the best chances.
Okonjo-Iweala would be the first woman and the first person from Africa to assume the position as WTO Director General. In the "Echo der Zeit" programme aired on 2 September 2020, Manfred Elsig, Deputy Managing Director and Director of Research at the WTI, talks about her chances.
