International Women's Day 2020

A message of solidarity and equality from the WTI Gender Committee.

More than 100 years ago, women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights. Inspired by this march, Clara Zetkin pioneered the idea to celebrate an International Women’s Day to press for demands in 1910.

43 years ago, United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming a Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace to be observed on any day of the year by Member States, in accordance with their historical and national traditions. Just one summer ago, here in Bern, up to 40,000 women and men marched to the Parliament for more money, time and respect for women.

As the WTI Gender Committee, we would like to remember this long heritage and build on it. We subscribe to this year’s International Women’s Day campaign theme #EachforEqual.

An equal world is an enabled world.

Happy International Women’s Day!
