WTI Fellow scoops young scholar award

WTI Fellow Dr Kelly Shang was awarded the Young Scholar Award from the Asian International Economic Law Network (AIELN) at its conference at the end of October.

Kelly, formerly a lecturer at Shanghai University of International Business and Economics and currently at Cambridge University, did her PhD at Maastricht University under the supervision of Peter Van den Bossche, now Director of Studies at the WTI.

Kelly received the award for a paper ‘Predatory AI Policies, Civil Liberty and Trade Liberalisation: Can WTO Law Come to Aid?’ she delivered at the conference in Taiwan.

The Young Scholar Award that includes a medal and roundtrip airfare is awarded to the best paper written by a junior scholar and presented at the conference.

The AIELN conference was held on 26 and 27 October on the theme ‘International Trade Regime for the Data-Driven Economy: How Will Artificial Intelligence Transform International Economic Law’.
