The second Belalp Interdisciplinary Seminar for the WTI's Doctoral School

It was a very good experience. Interdisciplinary research or even planning such research, where economists, lawyers and political scientists have to find common ground, is tough. The calming atmosphere of the Swiss Alps and marvellous views made this process much smoother and remarkable. Also, the possibility to get versatile feedback from major experts in the disciplines was an eye-opening experience on the project's details, flaws and advantages. I am grateful to the World Trade Institute for such an opportunity.

THE NEW WORLD OF NON-TRADE CONCERNS AND TRADE POLICY VENUES

From the 24th to the 26th June, 2024, at the iconic venue of Belalp, Wallis, WTI PhD students and invited facilitators came together for a couple days discussion, brainstorming, presentations and of course, the view.

The seminar was a great opportunity to learn how to write grant proposals for research funds, an exercise which is far from easy, but also key for those who wish to pursue an academic career. Students found it was also very helpful to hear senior researchers’ own experience with grant writing across different disciplines (law, political science, economics). The students also had the chance to participate in a mock interview for their grant proposal.

From the students:

"Belalp was a very unique opportunity to communicate with fellow researchers on both intellectual and educational levels. The two days seminar was a huge opportunity not only to receive guidance on project and research management from experienced facilitators, but also to produce ideas and think towards a vision for issues that have huge impact on trade politics, law and economics."
